Planning a road trip around hotel charging

The cheapest and least stressful charge of a road trip is the one that happens while you sleep. Plan hotels first and fast chargers second, and charging stops become the exception.

The overnight-first method

1. Pick your overnight towns. Decide roughly where each day ends.
2. Find a hotel with charging in each town. That is what this directory's state and city pages are for. Verify the listing with a call, especially the port count.
3. Arrive with a comfortable buffer. You do not need to arrive nearly empty; the overnight hours will fill whatever you need.
4. Use fast charging only to bridge the days. With full mornings, many travel days need one short fast-charge stop or none.

What can go wrong, and the fix

• The one charger is taken. Prefer properties showing more than one port, or ask the front desk about their practice when the station is occupied.
• The charger is slower than expected. An overnight stay forgives a slow charger. A two-hour dinner stop does not. Match your expectations to the listed level.
• Winter and mountains. Cold and climbing both raise consumption. Add margin in those conditions and treat range estimates conservatively.
